Randevyn

l_55e55e2a1eaf4bd6b4c1b02f7fe123a0

01. Soul Discoveries - Did you write all the lyrics on your The Randevyn Project?

. Randevyn – Hey Matthew! Its an honour to be interviewed by Soul Discoveries and I’m really glad to have this opportunity to do this with you today. I just wanted to start off this interview just by saying that. I actually did with the exception of Jena Tree that was a collab between me and India.Arie.

02. Soul Discoveries – How was it doing background vocals for India.Arie?

. Randevyn – Doing background vocals for India was an amazing honour.  We were trying for a long time how we could figure out working together and so when she called me to go on the road and do that it was great! I had a great time. I learned a lot. And it was just an honour.

03. Soul Discoveries – What helps your growth as an artist?

. Randevyn – There are many things that have helped my growth in terms of growing into the person and the man and the artist that I am today. By trial and era there are a lot of things that I learned or I’ve learned. A lot of very important lessons that I have learned. I think the most important lesson because I could probably go on and on, is to be myself. And to find the value in being Randevyn. And not trying to be anything else or anyone else but valuing, treasuring and capitalising on own experiences, my own writing style, my own singing style, my own art and the person that I am because thats all I can be. And thats the best thing I have to offer the world is me! And I’m honoured to do that!

04. Soul Discoveries – What inspired you to sing about depression?

. Randevyn – What inspired me to sing about depression as you put it (laughs) and some other issues. I don’t really want to be tagged as the artist that sings about depression. I sing about conquering and over coming issues and challenges because  life is all about challenges. Love, yeah we all know love, love is apart of life but its not the only part of life . There are many people that live there entire lives and never truly fall in love. I was really just speaking from my own experiences and it probably feels like an album of healing because it was for me. All I did was just get in the booth and sing about how I felt. And some of the lessons that I’ve learned in life so far up until that point. That was a really hard time for me I worked on that album for the last passed two years and the past two years have been a significant challenge for me in many many ways and the way I got through it was to sing and write about it. So what your really experiencing with the Randevyn Project is your experiencing my life. Listening to some of the lessons I’ve learned. Sort of feeling the energy from some of my inspiration.

05. Soul Discoveries - What are you listening to at the moment?

. Randevyn – At the moment I’m listening to Sarah Berellis, John Mayer, Brandy, Chicago and actually India.Arie because she’s one of my personal favourites not just because we have a relationship or a connection but because her music really does inspire me. Incredibly actually!

06. Soul Discoveries – Who do you look up to in music?

. Randevyn – I think there’s a lot of people who I look up to musically for different reasons. Of course India’s a mentor for me. And I do admire John Mayer’s music very very much. His style and his delivery and what he does. Coldplay. Love Coldplay! And also Hoobastank. And the list goes on and on and on.

07. Soul Discoveries – Do you worry about people not liking your music?

. Randevyn – I don’t worry about people not liking my music. There will be people who don’t like Randevyn. There will be people who love Randevyn. I don’t worry about people who doesn’t like it I don’t make music for the people who don’t like it. I make music for the people who like it and really I make music largely for myself. Its an instrument of healing for me and its a gift that I have a responsibility to use so who’s gonna like it and who doesn’t like it I mean thats pointless to worry about. Thats not a concern I usually have.

08. Soul Discoveries – Who did you work with for The Randevyn Project?

. Randevyn – The Randevyn Project was recorded with a band of incredible phenomenal musicians and an awesome producer named Mike Phillips who directed the band and produced all the music. I played a lot of the musical idea’s myself on piano and then have other musicians come in and cover it. It was an absolutely life changing experience for me as an artist because I got to see my idea’s really come to life. From the stage of conception all the way through the band had recorded a complete full colourful song that just shined like a diamond. So it was just a collaboration of some musical minds and I appreciated the opportunity to have been able to work with them.

09. Soul Discoveries – What do you think of Amy Winehouse?

. Randevyn – Amy Winehouse! Usually I don’t give my opinion about specific artists but I’ll do it! I think that Amy Winehouse despite whatever people say about her I think she has some great ideas. I think she has a great handle on a very destinct sound. She’s been able to make that work well for her.

10. Soul Discoveries – What do you think of artists who are under-exposed?

. Randevyn – I think of course independent artists and there is an artist who is one of my favourites who could do with a little more exposure and does a great job and is just fantastic is Kameron Corvet. He has a new album out Cooporate Rockstar is something else that I’ve been listening too. So there’s a little plug for Kameron! Love what he does. Love his art! He’s amazing. I’d love to see him more exposed.

11. Soul Discoveries – What inspired you for the concept of your song Graveyard Treasures?

. Randevyn – Just like the song starts out “My Daddy used to always say/That the richest place in the whole word is a grave”. My Father inspired me for the concept of Graveyard Treasures. Coming up is that is something he’d always say. And he always encouraged us to do what we felt inspired to do because there will come a time in everyone’s life when you won’t be able to do those things anymore. So the here and the now is all we really have. So that song was was inspired by that idea that my Father instilled in my early on in life.

13. Soul Discoveries – Do you see India.Arie at all?

. Randevyn – I wouldn’t say I see India a whole lot. I see her semi-regularly. Whenever she’s in town she’s busy, she’s doing a lot, she has one of those schedules. The last time I saw her I think was in December maybe a month ago or so. She was finalising her record and I came through the studio to sit with her and review it with her and it was awesome. Its always an honour to just sit with her and listen to some music and trait some ideas. She has a great great record. She’s awesome!

14. Soul Discoveries – Whats the soul scene like in Atlanta, U.S.A?

. Randevyn – I’m not terribly familiar anymore. I don’t really consider myself a really embeded part of the “soul scene” in Atlanta even though I’ve done some soul music here in Atlanta that I think has had some visibility in the soul community in Atlanta. I think there’s a sense of combradery here in the soul scene for whatever artist you’d consider to be apart of that. It has always been my experience that everyone has been passionate about music and likes to have fun and sing and so shows together and support each other. Just kind of be a family in a sense.

. Randevyn Message: Thanks again for the opportunity to speak with you here at Soul Discoveries.

Soul Discoveries Interviews Collette!!!

Collette

l_9c81afa815ab7a7efcc5d78c972faacd

01. Soul Discoveries – Your from South Carolina. What is it like to live there and do music?

. Collette – South Carolina is a wonderful place, and I’m proud to call it home because the culture and the history are so rich… and I love my family and friends down there. But it’s also a place with a lot of growing to do in terms of cultural acceptance. So, it’s an interesting place to be a musician because race and class still matter very much there, and if you’ve grown up there, that realization runs through your veins and your music.

02. Soul Discoveries – When did you begin music and start singing?

. Collette - I started piano lessons when I was 5 years old, but I’m not the greatest at that… I started alto saxophone a few years later, and I always sang in choirs. I’m a late bloomer though – I didn’t start my solo singing career until 2006. My first solo show was in November 2006 at a place called Hush in Columbia, SC… I just decided to give it a try, and fell in love

03. Soul Discoveries - What albums have you enjoyed hearing in the recent months?

. Collette - I am really into a Swedish band called Little Dragon. I LOVE their first album SO much. I’m also still listening to Emily King’s first CD a LOT, and that new Eric Roberson. Ryan Leslie’s first CD is in constant rotation in the car and on the iPod… that’s another story… *my dream producer*.  J.

04. Soul Discoveries – Where can people buy your debut album Experience Collette?

. Collette – My CD is available on iTunes.com – you just have to search for “Experience Collette.” It’s also at cdbaby.com/Collette, and on my web site www.ExperienceCollette.com.

05. Soul Discoveries – Have you been compared to Jill Scott because I hear great comparisons?

. Collette – LOL! That is the comparison I get more often than any other… and it’s an HONOR. I was in my freshman year at Howard University when “Who Is Jill Scott?” came out and it CHANGED my LIFE. Musiq Souldchild’s “Aijuswanaseing” came out that year too. Those two CD’s and others helped me see how the music I’d always listened to growing up (Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, Duke Ellington, etc.) could be translated in a modern sense but not lose it’s depth… Jill Scott is still one of my ultimate favorites on every level. I also get compared to Amel Larrieux sometime, and she is my absolute favorite contemporary vocalist, so that kind of takes my breath away.

06. Soul Discoveries – What one word would be best to describe you and your sound?

. Collette - Honest.

07. Soul Discoveries – How was it recording Experience Collette?

. Collette – Ha! Well, that was an “experience” all it’s own… It was a roller-coaster ride of highs, lows, really lows, and the ultimate high – finishing it! It was a great learning experience, and I think that I am a smarter musician and businesswoman because of it. I traveled back and forth to Atlanta a lot from Columbia (SC), and ended up losing my job… not funny at the time, but in hindsight, hilarious and totally worth it.

08. Soul Discoveries - You have ten songs on Experience Collette, which ones do you like most?

. Collette – Aw, that’s like asking which child you like most! But if I had to choose, I love the way “You Don’t Know” seems to connect to people across genres… and make guys think I’m singing to them! Hahaha! “Material Star” is a lot of fun, and “Dance In the Rain,” is probably my favorite because of its message. It’s also my mother’s favorite.

09. Soul Discoveries – Who would you like to collaborate with in the soul scene?

. Collette – I would LOVE to collaborate with Ryan Leslie, India.Arie, Shae Fiol, Eric Roberson, Common, Andre 3000 and Stevie Wonder. Lofty goals, I know, but… I’m just sayin… Lol!

10. Soul Discoveries – Do you have a message for Soul Discoveries readers?

. Collette – Dear Soul Discoveries Readers: You are reading this, so it’s safe to say that you support or are interested in independent soul music…THANK YOU. This music is refreshing our airwaves… Airwaves that are currently saturated with gunk and grime being passed off as urban creativity. The only way independent music continues to flow is with YOUR support. So please continue to check out shows, web sites, CDs, blogs, and any other channels for supporting independent soul music. Now, I’m not saying support anything that doesn’t appeal to you… But if touches your soul in any way, then it’s alright to touch back.

EWing Interview on Soul Discoveries!

EWing

l_83d7a9940ff84dd4a9b1c1c90fe084a6

01. Soul Discoveries – What was it like recording your EP?

. Paul Ewing – It was a remarkably unplanned process. (The EWING EP as it is actually called, is now sold out BTW)
I had been given some money from Island Records and from other supporters and I decided that I wanted to do some work with Steve The Scotsman Harvey who produced Donnie’s The Colored Section and Frank McCombs The Truth, and many others, so I got in contact and he liked my material and I took the opportunity to get out there and start working on some songs. I never actually planned to make an EP, but I came back with 3 tracks and along with another 3 completed tracks I had produced with some other cats over there, I thought – “heck – why not press an EP -people are always asking me for music at gigs. So I went ahead and pressed and then launched at the Roundhouse in Camden. It was cool.

02. Soul Discoveries – What stages are you at with your debut album?

. Paul Ewing – I have had a very interesting 2 years since recording the EP, and writing has been a large part of the process. I also had an inspired idea to revisit a whole bunch of old and forgotten material from 1998=2000. I hired an old church in central London and with some producer and engineer friends and with a bunch of musicians, we recorded about 8 of my older songs. I even assembled a small orchestra. It was quite an undertaking and well worth the effort. I had assumed that this would have culminated in some sort of finished product, but as any artist will tell you, its important to have a break in the recording process to allow things to settle and to get a bit of objectivity. On listening back to what we cut, some songs worked and some didn’t. That was just a necessary part of the process. I was also back out in Malibu with Steve Harvey and we mixed some of the stuff I did in the UK, whilst further developing it, and that was also a useful part of the process. I understood at the end of that period that I wasn’t ready for the album to be made for various reasons, although I am glad to say that I am now! Hopefully it will be released in 2010. I have some INCREDIBLE opportunities lined up – but I’m gonna wait till I have signed the documentation before I declare what it is!!!

03. Soul Discoveries – Have you heard any feedback from Island Records?

. Paul Ewing – The guy who funded me from Island moved on during the process, ( as is so often the case) so my contacts there kinda disappeared.

04. Soul Discoveries – What music by other artists have inspired you in 2009?

. Paul Ewing – Maxwell has come out with a good album – 6 out of the 9 songs really work for me. I wasn’t too into it for the first few listens, but after really doing some research on his process and extensively listening, I have to say his journey has really inspired me and the honesty behind the music is so obvious, it really defines the meaning of soul ( to me) I have also been listening to a lot of classical and trying to get away from the “neo soul” genre, as there’s nothing much new going on in it right now. Everyone sounds the same to me!! I listen to a lot of pop music and a classical and old favorites like Tracy Chapman and John Lennon and Joni Mitchell etc. I listen to the craft of the writing most of the time. I am listening to a lot of STING right now……. Seal has a good back catalogue that is always refreshing to hear again, although I have no idea what he’s singing about half the time!! hahaha!

05. Soul Discoveries – You’ve had great feedback on your music so far. Who have been your favorite quotes?

. Paul Ewing – People have been so kind and generous – I value everyone’s positive comments, Bobby Watson – Bass player for Rufus and Chaka Khan said he my writing was fresh – Marcella Detroit called me a Modern Day Marvin Gaye, which is heavy. I got some good quotes on my pages – peeps can check them out.

06. Soul Discoveries – What inspires you to song write?

. Paul Ewing – Life. My life and occasionally others. I have to let it come naturally. Its a strange process, writing. Sometimes it flows naturally., and then sometimes you have to work your ass off to get the grooves working, and trying to progress musically and lyrically. My life is always pretty dramatic, so I can usually find inspiration quite easily! Often a song I’m listening to will conjure up emotions in me, and I will write down what I’m feeling in that moment and then take it to the piano. I don’t use computers to write at all – I do everything on the piano =- that’s it. I used to use a drum machine, but these days I’m using it less and less. I guess I’m kinda old school. Environment is really important for inspiration. Sometimes a new piano will have a few songs locked up inside, and if I’m getting to know a new instrument, its often quite inspiring.

07. Soul Discoveries – Why do you want to sign to Island Records?

. Paul Ewing – well- I’m not 100% wedded to the idea of signing to Island. I might sign if I am fortunate enough to be given the offer. As long as there is good marketing behind the product, and the people believe in it, then that’s a good place to start. However – I do still believe in major labels to a certain extent because they still have massive push behind them if you get the right kind of product and a good deal. We all know the arguments for Major and Indie – a lot of indie artist complain about majors, but that often only because they have never had a chance to actually get signed by them. Its extremely extremely difficult right now for the artist to get support – and so most people are funding it and doing it all themselves which is extremely hard and tiring, but you really have to want to do it, and HAVE to do it, because its really hard to make a living from it in the early stages. You better have some good songs!!!

08. Soul Discoveries – Did you do any studying in University before your launched your music career?

. Paul Ewing – Yes- I studied to be an actor and was quite successful for about 12 years. I worked extensively in Kids TV and also 15 months with the Royal Shakespeare company, and various other big theatres up and down the UK as well as doing lots of radio and presenting etc. I actually made a really healthy living from it. I have only been doing music full time for about 3 years. I still do radio presenting and will probably act again if and when the opportunity arises and it enhances what else Im doing at the time.

09. Soul Discoveries – How was it performing at Jazz Café?

. Paul Ewing – I enjoyed the experience immensely. It was an honor to support international artists, and it was fun doing a venue like that. I learnt a lot and the fact that they asked me back again so soon for another support slot was very encouraging. I got love for the JC!

10. Soul Discoveries – Do you have a message for Soul Discoveries readers?

. Paul Ewing – Yes- thank you for supporting my music and I really hope you enjoy the début when it comes out. Its hopefully going to be something quite unique. And remember “The longer it takes, the deeper the roots, the greater the shape, and the sweeter the Fruit” – Paul Ewing – September 2009. Keep on keeping on. Its a big world out there and there lots of people trying to do what we do.

Yolanda Johnson on Soul Discoveries!!!

Yolanda Johnson

l_9a3de5c379c901fe6f09b07aaeaea719

01. Soul Discoveries – What inspired you to create Breathing?

. Yolanda Johnson -  If you’re not Breathing, emotionally, physically you are dead. I’m Breathing in every since of it now…and without fear. I wanted my first full length album to show growth from my previous projects, life lessons learned over the years, and loves ups and downs.

02. Soul Discoveries – When did you start singing?

. Yolanda Johnson -  I started singing when I was five years old. My mother says I was singing since I was in the womb lol.

03. Soul Discoveries - How did your musical family Charly Wilson inspire you musically?

. Yolanda Johnson - Well everyone in my family is musical so being surrounded by music all my life was a definite blessing. Sort of like speaking a different language if you’re around it from birth you’re bound to pick it up and be fluent in it. So music is my second language.

04. Soul Discoveries – What one word describes you best?

. Yolanda Johnson - Wow one word? That’s a tough one but the first thing that comes to mind is “giving.” I’m a very giving person. Time, talent, resources, knowledge…I give it all.

05. Soul Discoveries – What albums have you enjoyed so far in 2009 by other artists?

. Yolanda Johnson -  I’m back tracking and in the discovery process right now. When I was working on Breathing I was in my own little world….no heavy tv watching, no listening to radio, or albums of any kind. I didn’t want any outside influences. I’m just now finally coming up for air. Right now I have Maxwell, Lady Gaga, Eric Roberson, and and the Tribute to Frankie Beverly and Maze on random play.

06. Soul Discoveries – How different is Breathing to Violet Flower EP?

. Yolanda Johnson -  Well for starters Breathing is double the amount of songs. Having a three year gap in between albums you experience different things, you grow, you live, and you learn so the songs express those things whether it be my experiences or those close to me. Also Breathing moves in so many different directions musically. At first I was concerned, you know with so many different styles being on the album but it came together quite nicely. The songs turned out to be like many different unique little fishes but they all swim together in the same ocean, so it worked.

07. Soul Discoveries – How will you be promoting Breathing?

. Yolanda Johnson - We have an online marketing campaign with Fusicology.com, Twitter, and Facebook. We are also hoping for some radio airplay,  and of course I’ll be performing in select cities.  Performing is something I miss doing. I took a hiatus from performing to focus on Breathing.

08. Soul Discoveries – What do you think of Soul Discoveries?

. Yolanda Johnson -  I absolutely love it. It gives the artist a true voice. I appreciate that to the fullest.

09. Soul Discoveries – What will listeners get when listening to Breathing?

. Yolanda Johnson - Honesty! This pretty much sums it up. Funny how I can think of one word for Breathing and not one word for myself lol.

10. Soul Discoveries – Do you have a message for Soul Discoveries readers?

. Yolanda Johnson - Yes I do. Live. Enjoy each second that you have. Life is not for you  to ovethink.  I hope that as you listen to Breathing it will be an aid to encourage you to Breathe and Live easier. Also thank you for taking the time to read this interview.

Soul Discoveries Interviews Trizonna McClendon!!!

Trizonna McClendon

Promo 1

01. Soul Discoveries – How did growing up in Chicago influence your music?

. Trizonna McClendon – Chicago is a beautifully talented soul and blues town and fortunately with it’s central location I was able to absorb sounds of the East, West and South as well. From rock to hip-hop this girl loves it all. I firmly believe that to be a true lover of music, you must expose your ears and mind to all sounds…don’t knock it until you try it…at least once anyway (Smiles).

02. Soul Discoveries – Your debut album on Overtones and Innuendos was solid. It had the hit Sunshine & Lemonade. How was that experience for you?

. Trizonna McClendon – It’s been such an amazing ride and it hasn’t stopped. The album was released 3 years ago and it’s still going strong…big thanks to my people that are still singing Sunshine & Lemonade.

03. Soul Discoveries – Who inspired you in music?

. Trizonna McClendon – My Dad inspired me with his love of music. He played records from sun up to sun down and I sat right by his side singing and grooving to every note. Some of my favorites are Minnie Ripperton, Michael Franks, The Spinners, Dinna Ross to name a few. If I said them all, I’d be typing until next week (Laughs).

04. Soul Discoveries – You travelled with the Castlemont Castleers Choir. How was that?

. Trizonna McClendon – It was such an amazing experience. I got my first taste of life on the road singing with the Castleers. We sang all over Norther California as well as the Midwest. For those who may not know, the Castlemont Castleers is a high school choir based in East Oakland, CA. I attended my first two years of high school there.

05. Soul Discoveries - Chicago is known for soul and jazz but also is the home to house. Do you listen to house or made any house records?

. Trizonna McClendon – Yes of course! You can’t say that you’re from Chicago if you haven’t gone to at least one “house” party in your life…and I’ve been to many. As a matter of fact, I have a house remix for Sunshine & Lemonade as well as for My Special, a single from my upcoming album.

06. Soul Discoveries – What is your favorite instrument?

. Trizonna McClendon – I love BASS! It’s sexy, earthy and oh so soulful.

07. Soul Discoveries – Explain more about 4 The Soul Reciprocity, Inc?

. Trizonna McClendon – 4 The Soul Reciprocity Inc is the Chicago based indie label that distributes my music. It’s owned and operated by my good friend and manager Greg “Olskool-Gre” Lewis. For more info please go to www.myspace.com/4tsr

08. Soul Discoveries – Who is taking care of you now on the music biz side of things?

. Trizonna McClendon – It is and always has been my manager Greg “Olskool Ice-Gre” Lewis…Honest Management is the name of the company. I couldn’t do what I do happily without my team (www.honest-management.com)

09. Soul Discoveries – How different is My Special to Overtones & Innuendos?

. Trizonna McClendon – I’m so excited about the new album, it’s actually called New Familiar. My Special was the buzz single. New Familiar picks up where Overtones & Innuendos left off as well as allows me to incorporate all of the sounds that I grew up loving. The album is R&B, jazz, Country, Folk, and 80’s  groove soaked in soul. I know this is a mouthful, but trust me when you hear the album it will all make sense.

10. Soul Discoveries – What was the last thing that made you smile/cry?

. Trizonna McClendon – That’s a great question. Let’s see. Smile. while on the train ride home, I watched the interaction between a senior couple. They held hands and gazed lovingly into each others eyes, their energy was radiant, just beautiful. Cry. I tear up at just about everything, but what stands out is recently being given a photo of my Grandmother whom I’d never met (She died when my Dad was 5) sitting in front of a piano learning that she was an amazing pianist. If only I could turn back the hands of time…Triz.

Chante Moore on Soul Discoveries

Chante Moore

chante_moore_brown-thumb-473x312

01. Soul Discoveries – Congratulations on the release of your new album. Love The Woman out 29th September on Peak Records. What does it feel like to be back in almost a decade?

. Chante Moore – Well, I don’t feel like I went away. My husband and I have done two albums since my last solo album. First one was an album of duets for really giving respect to the major duets that have happened in the last twenty years or so. We did a whole remix album of that and then we did a double album together, a gospel album as well as the R&B album in one. With R&B love songs, we’ve been working and travelling and performing for the last seven or eight years so I don’t feel like I’ve taken a break. So I can’t answer that question as exactly as you ask!

02. Soul Discoveries – You grew up as a daughter of a minister. Listening to gospel music and you achieved respect as a gospel vocalist in the beginning. Back then; did you ever think you’d become an accomplished vocalist or a major label artist as you are today? What were your thoughts at the beginning?

. Chante Moore – I didn’t always think of myself as being a singer. My family are extremely talented. My father plays piano and he is a writer. My Mother was a singer, she’s gone on now for twelve years she’s been gone but she was a singer and a minister in her own right. My sister is a pianist, guitarist, she plays the flute and she writes and draws and she sings. My brother is a drummer, so everybody in my family is extremely talented. But they didn’t think I was that talented. When I would sing that would really tell me to shut up. There were like you cannot sing Chante oh my god please shut up! I love it, I’d go in my room and sing from the time I’d stopped school, I’d eat dinner, do my home work, then go back to singing until it was time to go to bed. It was just what I loved to do and it was gospel music all day and all night we weren’t allowed to listen to anything else in the home because of my mothers and fathers convictions on music but I just enjoyed music so much. As I grew up I guess I got better at practising, I got better, when I really decided to sing I was in a play when I was sixteen and I played Dorothy of the wiz. And it really changed my mind about singing, the performing bug bit me and then by twenty-one I was in the industry making records. It’s been a wonderful time for me and its what I enjoy most. Although I think the world is opening doors for me to do other things but singing is definitely what I enjoy most.

03. Soul Discoveries – You’ve been on the music scene for fifteen years is that right?

. Chante Moore – Since 1992…

04. Soul Discoveries – You’ve had hits such as Love Takes Over and Straight Up…

. Chante Moore – I guess so! I don’t pay attention to the charts!

05. Soul Discoveries – You have flourished into a professional vocalist. Love The Woman covers lots of genres R&B/Soul, jazz, ballads, bossa nova and more. What inspired you to step out of R&B/Soul styles?

. Chante Moore – The Minnie Ripperton song was a song that my husband and I, when we got married, that was the song that was played when we walked down the aisle, and so it was a special song as far as that is concerned. She’s one of my favourite artists and so I wanted to remake that song. Then the Nancy Wilson song is just a great story I think music should be just about telling stories, it’s very visual and intense. It would be very scary to go through that but I just love the way the story unfolds it just leads you through this story, this adventure in music and I believe that’s what I’d love to hear more of.  We had to be forthright and I guess daring, and innovative and I believe we have to do things that are not planned all the time and as I say I want music to change and I want to be one of the people who change that. I know what I want to hear on the radio I probably have to be the one to make it. I have to be a little bit different to what already being played on the radio.

06. Soul Discoveries – Like Ciara & Missy Elliot…?

. Chante Moore – Its not about dissing them, its about having music for different generations. Its about music that’s about having options, because not everyone sounds like Ciara or Missy Elliot, we should have some options. We should have other kinds of music at other times, and stations to play artists that are maybe more mature or just different than the regular R&B hip-hop sound. It is about having options.

07. Soul Discoveries – Love The Woman is your fifth solo album. Did you enjoy making Love The Woman?

. Chante Moore – I did enjoy but sometimes in music you come out the other end and it’s not always what you hope it to be. But this album is exactly from the heart, and it is what I want it to be, and it’s where I am musically. Its something that I’m very proud of and I hope it gets some kind of attention so that we can come to London and perform there. I just feel it’s always been an honour to sing and it still is.

08. Soul Discoveries – Is Love The Woman out at the same time as your husbands new CD?

. Chante Moore – It comes out today as a matter of fact!

09. Soul Discoveries – Your album offers something kind of new to your fans. You’ve collaborated with Raphael Saadiq. How was that?

. Chante Moore – It was fun. Raphael was very goofy and fun. He’s a silly guy. We had a really good time laughing and making music. He’s extremely talented. He’s a good guy, always up beat and fun so we had a real good time.

10. Soul Discoveries – You collaborated with a songwriter, who wrote all the album was it less stressful making the album as someone had already written it for you?

. Chante Moore – I’m never stressed making music ever! Music is exciting and fun. It’s about the meaning of words so it’s never about being stressed at all. Its all about does it reflect the sentiment of my heart. Even though I didn’t write it. That’s more important to me. Making sure it reflects what my heart would say and her songs absolutely reflect that. She’s a great writer, she’s young, and she’s very very talented and very sweet. So I was really honoured to make her music actually.

11. Soul Discoveries – As well as collaborating with talented producers and songwriters your obviously talented yourself. You acted as executive producer on the CD. How was that?

. Chante Moore – It was good to be able to make a record how I wanted it to be made. I didn’t want to compete myself with anybody else or try to compare myself to anybody else or be compared to anyone else. It was really about expressing my own musical ideas how I wanted to express myself musically so I was very happy to be able to make the record I wanted to make.

12. Soul Discoveries – Has Kenny Lattimore and George Duke heard the album?

. Chante Moore – Have they heard the album? Of course! My husband helped me make the album and George Duke was the producer of the album so yeah! George Duke has produced five songs on the record, so we got a chance to work together again and he produced Give Me Time and a couple of others I can’t remember. My husband is always with me when I’m making music. He listens to the songs, they always love everything!

13. Soul Discoveries – You look very pretty on the cover of Love The Woman. Has image always been important to you as an artist?

. Chante Moore – I think image is important for every artist really because it’s the first impression that people will receive.  Although sometimes I believe I come off as different to my real personality. I’m not always walking around looking like those pictures do. I’m much more relaxed and much more casual than that on a day-to-day basis. I love dressing up. But I think my image misrepresents my personality a little but it is what it is its OK.

14. Soul Discoveries – Does your name Chante Moore have any hidden meaning?

. Chante Moore – No. Although Chante means to sing in French.

15. Soul Discoveries – Do you feel empowered as an artist?

. Chante Moore – I feel each artist should grow and learn musically and as a person. Hopefully I’m growing and learning and getting better. Sometimes in the industry they want the youngest and the newest but sometimes you have to learn what you do and to do it well. And to develop and grow is a great opportunity to have in this industry, so I’m pleased with the work that I’ve created.

Michael Olatuja Interview on Soul Discoveries

Michael Olatuja

l_641e53cbd07eed8a6160a306922cffa0

01.  Soul Discoveries – What inspired you to call your debut album Speak?

. Michael Olatuja – The language of music is one that we all “SPEAK”. It unites diverse cultures/backgrounds. This language is spoken from the heart. And the possibilities are endless.  The language of music is one of the most powerful.  I want the title to convey that I have a message for anyone who will listen.  It is a message of hope, encouragement, inspiration and positivity.

02. Soul Discoveries – Previously to Speak, you’ve collaborated with Terence Blanchard, Patti Austin, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan to name a few. How was that?

. Michael Olatuja – I did a show at NJPAC in November of 2008.  It was the movie music of Spike Lee featuring Terence Blanchard. It was great working with both of them.  I am currently on tour with Terence’s band I am learning so much about music & performance from them. Terence has really encouraged me to stretch.

03. Soul Discoveries – Speak fuses soul, jazz and traditional African music. What genres mean the most to you? And why bring in African music?

. Michael Olatuja – Jazz encouraged my freedom to improvise Soul encouraged me to do it from the heart R & B encourage a deep groove. (Which is undeniable) World-music encourages that you not forget your roots. Gospel- Gives a sense of purpose, encourages, inspires and uplifts. I grew up in a church that sang Yoruba Christian songs and played Yoruba style music. I honed my skills playing in many Yoruba music bands. So when it came to songwriting, this influence came out naturally.

04. Soul Discoveries - You’ve got Eska, Roachford, Lynden David Hall, Terri Walker, TY, and others. How was that?

. Michael Olatuja – The original vision I had was to record a jazz trio/quartet album with Myself, Jason Rebello, Femi Temowo & Troy Miller.  However destiny had another plan. The 1st singer I called was Eska Mtungwazi. I asked her to record some songs for me as a demo. Her response changed everything. She said that I (myself) was not a demo musician and that I should just record the album. From that point onwards the recording took on a personality of its own and grew into a full-scale production.  The 2nd singer I called was the late “Lynden David Hall” (RIP.) The U.K. soul star was featured on 2 songs “Ma Foya” and “Hold On”. It is said that this was his final recording.   I know it was very special to him. (This makes it ever so sacred and special to me).  I am often very emotional when I listen back to those songs. From that point onwards, my confidence slowly grew and the vision of my album (featuring some of the UK’s finest singer/instrumentalists) was born. I then contacted others like Terri Walker and TY, and then wrote some songs for them with the help of my co-writer Eska Mtungwazi. All in all, they are people I have recorded and toured with over the years in London. (Who were also great friends). This also made the recording very special.

05. Soul Discoveries – It states your guitar influences are George Benson, John Patitucci & Richard Bona. How long have you played bass? Do you play any other instruments?

. Michael Olatuja – I started in music by following my older brother, Allen, to choir rehearsal in Nigeria at around 5 years old. We played the Nigerian tenor drums & percussion together.  He was my first musical teacher/influence. I have been playing the electric bass for 18 years and the acoustic bass for 11 years. I use the piano for compositional purposes.

06. Soul Discoveries – You’ve traveled London, Lagos and New York. Which City inspires you the most/love the most?

. Michael Olatuja - I have lived in New York since Sept 2004. As a performer, New York encouraged me to take it to the high level.  As a songwriter, New York encouraged me to be original because there are so many artists out there.

07. Soul Discoveries - Did you enjoy the recording process of Speak?

. Michael Olatuja – I enjoyed the recording process of Speak. It was amazing watching those songs grow and take on a life of their own. It was even more enjoyable because I had very good team musicians who brought their colors to the table.

08. Soul Discoveries - In terms of technology. What software do you use to produce soul, jazz and African music? Do you always use live instruments in your recordings?

. Michael Olatuja – Now I use Pro – tools 8 and Logic 8.  Whilst making the demos I may use software instruments. But with the actual recording I prefer to use live instruments.

09. Soul Discoveries – You’ve studied at Middlesex University. Did that develop any of your musical or creative skills?

. Michael Olatuja – Yes, it developed my music theory, composition & performance skills.  Studying in institutions gave me the general focus to see projects though & keep to deadlines.

10. Soul Discoveries - Whom should I check out in the UK soul, jazz scene that you know who I don’t?

. Michael Olatuja – A lot of the people who performed on “Speak” are my favorites. They are all artists:  Femi Temowo, Troy Miller, Eska Mtungwazi, Jason Rebello, Ty, Terri Walker, Jean Toussant, and Andrew Rochford.

11. Soul Discoveries – Your lyrics come from a Gospel root/foundation. Filled with courage and hope. What inspires you to pen songs?

. Michael Olatuja – Often, I need encouragement myself. This great thing about encouraging yourself through song form is that you encourage others as well.   Also, life has many twists and turns for all of us. We all go through mountains and valleys.  Because of my faith in god, I am assured that all things will eventually work out for the good.

12. Soul Discoveries - Are you gigging in London soon?

. Michael Olatuja – We are planning some CD release shows in London later this year.

13. Soul Discoveries – Lastly, what do you think of Soul Discoveries?

. Michael Olatuja – I think Soul Discoveries is great. Thanks so much.

Kyra Simone – UK Soul

Kyra Simone

cropped

01. Soul Discoveries - Where does your musical abilities come from?

. Kyra – Well it’s not the cliche line.. I use to sing in church or in the choir.  My parents are spiritual people but not church goers but believe in God the Creator.  I just have a love for singing, writing and expressing, emotions, life experiences and and spiritual encounters through the art form of songwriting and poetry.

02. Soul Discoveries – What do you think of my Soul Discoveries?

. Kyra – I am loving the mixtapes… I was amazed that you got soul discoveries TV.. It’s great what you and your team ( if there is one ) is doing… I think its all about collectively creating an enterprise as we are for the same cause… they say united we stand divided we fall!!!! Congrats on what soul discoveries is doing!!!

03. Soul Discoveries – How long have you been singing?

. Kyra – Wow.. thats a goodun… well my journey is slghtly different in the sense I didnt take singing seriously enough to pursue it as a career until five years ago where I went to college and gained Drama and Music.  My dad told me that I have always been singing from before I could talk lol, but I went against my dad’s advice and followed the family and pursued a ‘real’ career.  Doing the 9-5 made me realise that this life was not for me.  Music is my soul.

04. Soul Discoveries – What singers do you listen to?

. Kyra – I listen to Prince, to Madonna, to Bilaal, to D’angelo, to Jill Scott, to Sade, to Aretha, to Luther, to jus wotever feeds my soul… sometimes I listen to a bit of Kylie then Grace Jones :)

05. Soul Discoveries – What is your favorite way to enjoy music?

. Kyra – Slow jams/Love songs are best when you’re indulging in ‘Sex and the City’ if you know what I mean and sometimes when I am writing poetry it just helps me capture that emotion also.  Most of the time music represents my moods but lately I use music to change and maybe inspire me to act positively when faced with a negative situation.

06. Soul Discoveries – If you had to have food with music what choice of food would it be?

. Kyra – Everytime Caribbean food!!!! closely followed by West Indian food lol!!!

07. Soul Discoveries – Do you think you are heading towards major labels or staying independent?

. Kyra - Major Independent or major label… My music is not just about local but I have a great desire to share music worldwide with major promotion.  So the above tend to have the finances to back this… unless we get a serious investor though.. I know that what ever works I will go with it.

08. Soul Discoveries – Do you think the loss of a family member makes music more important i.e from my own recent experience this has become true?

. Kyra – It depends on how you as a person takes.  I have never said this before now but my focus is not where it should be.. I lost someone (my grandmother) who raised me and was my best friend and right now I have never felt so lost.  I wanted to make her proud of me and now she is gone I am dealing with re-alligning myself.  So no losing her has not made music more important to me.. but hopefully by expressing this I will be able to find strength and encouragement to go for Complete Success.  Going off the subject slightly… You really see how selfish people can be at this time… some of my so called friends are still wrapped up in ME ME ME so this period has helped me to see the reality of what some of my ‘friends’ are about.

09. Soul Discoveries - I hate Lemar. Do you like him?

. Kyra – LOL why do u hate Lemar???  Welll he seems ok to me… he is doing his thing.

10. Soul Discoveries – What do you think of Amy Winehouse?

. Kyra – Amazing and very sad at the same time.  I wouldn’t ever wish her addiction on anybody but hey we all have choices and that was her choice.  Her voice is wicked though!!!

11. Soul Discoveries – Talk about some of your own music?

. Kyra – I don’t like talking about my music… it’s all about listening…l mean not just the melodies and instruments but the lyrics too.  I just can’t help myself… I’ve always got a story to tell and advice to give… One day Imma make a track that’s just about nothing.. hahaha yeah right!!! Cup of Coffee is my favourite and Let’s just be friends seems to be my life story since I made that song.. So now its time for a change… that’s why the release of my poetry book ONE is gonna be life changing for me and many other people that read it.  I know it has inpspired and invoked emotions and reactions from people already.

12. Soul Discoveries – What is UKSoul.Org?

. Kyra – UKSoul.Org is an organisation that noticed there wasn’t a hub or home you could find out about quality soul music that is promoted in the UK, so GNVilla aka Graeme went about setting this up and I appreciating and wanting to be part of this was very proud when I was told I could be the FACE of the UKSOUL.ORG for more info go to http://www.uksoul.org.

Dede Davi – London Soul Artist

Dede Davi

l_2c3ccd64202449d48fc8902ea27bdec9

01. Soul Discoveries – Your music is very raw. You use guitars and live band. Is that how you have always created music?

. Dede - No Not at all that came about quite organically. I play piano and used to compose a lot of my music on there , onto computer. Then I decided I wanted to work with a few producers and see how that turned out! That went alright, managaed to get a song played on national radio, but I felt the sound wasn’t really me, so I thought I’d go back to instruments, where I was in the first place and see what came out! I think it suits me better really, I feel  a lot more confident with live instruments!

02. Soul Discoveries – Who are your key influences?

. Dede - I grew up listening to whatever my elder brother would play, hip hop, classic rnb, old school garage, I just thought whatever he did had to be cool! when I grew up a bit I developed my own tastes, I got into neo-soul Jill Scott, Floetry , I was obssessed with Alicia Keys when she came out I used to emulate her at school talent shows.  Id say my taste has broaded a lot I listen to  Amel Larrieux , Fantasia, Amy winehouse, Adele, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, . Id say my key influences were Amel Larriuex, Cold play, Corrine Bailey rae, Jill scott and  Sia, I just love her quirkyness!

03. Soul Discoveries – I love your song Mirror Mirror, would you send me an mp3 of that to put in a UK Soul mix?

. Dede - yea sure! do I have to sign something for you to do that!??!

04. Soul Discoveries – You kind of remind me of a new Corinne Bailey Rae. Ever been compared to her?

. Dede -  yea quite a bit. That is the best compliment ever! I just love her , Im not sick of her album yet and ive  had it for nearly 3 years!

05. Soul Discoveries - What music things are going on in Croydon?

. Dede -  I have absolutely no idea, Im on Manchester at the moment!

07. Soul Discoveries – Have you done any major work?

. Dede – Ive worked with one or two producers , I can’t say any names though!

08. Soul Discoveries – Have you done any backing vocals/performances with major artists?

. Dede – nope!

09. Soul Discoveries - Adele or Amy Winehouse?

. Dede – oooo thats a tough one. Amy because of the sheer entertainment factor, and because I met her best mate in Camden and he tells me she lovely. But adele too! I love hometown glory! that is a tune!

10. Soul Discoveries – What do you think of Soul Discoveries?

. Dede -  you guys are well cool!!! :) xxx

Marlon Saunders – Soul Discoveries Interviews

Marlon Saunders

l_2108041f9dd44528798a626a0f37991d

01. Soul Discoveries - In progression of your to be released new album Soul Discoveries it is an honor to interview Marlon Saunders. Welcome to Soul Discoveries…

. Marlon Saunders – Well thank you for inviting me to share with you and your Soul Discoveries fans

02. Soul Discoveries – Your career feels as though it has only just started when in actual fact you’ve been singing and doing music since you were five. What inspired you to play music so young?

. Marlon Saunders – I was just drawn to music. There has always been a special connection I have felt with music…it’s spiritual, it’s beautiful, it’s honest, and it is liberating.

03. Soul Discoveries – Berklee College of Music pushed you in the direction of working with greats such as Dianne Reeves to Joe Henderson, Ron Carter and more. Who taught you things you remember today?

. Marlon Saunders – There have been so many great influences in my life…I would have to say my Dad is one of my biggest influences because he is very wise and always challenged me to think for myself, to be unique, and to always strive for the best. Quincy Jones explained to me how important it is to understand the pyramid of success…Walter Beasley has always been an inspiration in terms of teaching me things about the business…Fonzi Thornton has always been like a big brother to me and taught me a lot about working as a singer in the business, and my musical producer and director Carl Carter who is also an amazing bassist, songwriter and an incredible friend has taught me the importance of playing live music with folk who are like family.

04. Soul Discoveries – Did you have a talented musical family?

. Marlon Saunders -My Mom and my sister sing in church. My grandfather I am told was an incredible musician.

05. Soul Discoveries – What does it feel like to be the rare Afrocentric African American male in the soul scene alongside so many Afrocentric African American female soul artists?

. Marlon Saunders – Hmmm. I never thought of it as such. I just create the music as honestly as I can. I feel that there is so much that needs to be said and remembered and I want my music to touch everyone. I guess I would say that my vision of the world is colored first in Blackness. I think there are many wonderful artists in the soul scene and I am always humbled when I hear how my lyrics and my music have affected so many.

06. Soul Discoveries – You before that had been in Voicestra founded by Bobby McFerrin. How was it? How did he become your mentor? And for those who don’t know who is Bobby McFerrin?

. Marlon Saunders – Bobby McFerrin is one of the greatest musicians of our time…his voice and his musicianship is off tha chain!!!!! Bobby is a beautiful soul…really genuine and lovng in terms of what he gives to Voicestra and the audience. I have been blessed to have been able to work with Bobby and everyone in Voicestra. When we are together there is great music being made but also great feelings of love, joy, and happiness. I really do miss everyone involved in Voicestra.

07. Soul Discoveries – Please discuss some of your more special recordings like Donald Browns French Kiss and others?

. Marlon Saunders – I am very excited to have spent time working with Jazzhole…this ambient soul/jazz collective has been such a wonderful growing period of my musical journey. Warren Rosenstein and John Pondel are my musical brothers. I had a great time working on April Hill’s Love 360 recording. It was released and the buzz on the recording just took off. It was really a lot of fun co producing the recording with Shawn Lucas who co produced and co wrote on Enter My Mind. I have just finished producing and writing with latin/soul artist Gemma Genazzano. This sexy lady from Spain’s new recording Si Me Quieres/If You Love Me will be released some time in the spring. I also worked with Angela Johnson last year on her new recent release A Woman’s Touch. I think she is so talented. I really love how she creates.

08. Soul Discoveries – From graduating at Berklee College of Music. You now also teach as a professor of voice. Talk about all your vocal work, teaching and coaching?

. Marlon Saunders – I am no longer teaching voice at Berklee College of Music. I do teach privately and do vocal workshops at various universities and colleges. My philosophy is that the voice flows best when the mind, body and soul are flowing as one.

09. Soul Discoveries - Since your voice had been featured in so many recordings but not yet your own and since your voice had been loved by students and audiences. Bobby McFerrin encouraged you to set up your own label Black Honey Records…

. Marlon Saunders – Well you are correct my voice has been featured on a lot of recordings and it actually was recording with Jazzhole that allowed me to search for creative ways to flow when touring with Bobby. Working with Bobby and Voicestra allowed me to find a voice that felt true to what I wanted to share on the Enter My Mind recording.

10. Soul Discoveries – Enter My Mind is your debut album. Please talk about who you worked with to make it a completed album i.e songwriters, musicians, vocalists…

. Marlon Saunders –Carl Carter was my right hand man…he is my writing partner, producer, and musical director. Carl is an amazing man because he is so true to the music and keeping the sound grooving. I also worked with Warren Rosenstein as a producer and co writer. Warren and I have spent so much time working on music together over the past 18 years it is always like coming home when I create with him. Shawn Lucas is another amazing musician. Incredible in terms of what he hears and how he is able to take what is in my head and help me get to the place I envision.

11. Soul Discoveries – The album is solid with long tracks and 14 songs to get into. What inspired your concept Enter My Mind other than it being your introductory album?

. Marlon Saunders – I just wanted to write music that was honest, live, and fun to create. I wanted to record a project that was about soul music.

12. Soul Discoveries – After Enter My Mind you re-released it through U.K’s Soul Brother Records like fellow soul artist N’Dambi – Tunin’ Up & Co-Signin’. It felt weird to see two major soul artists do a combine re-release on such a rubbish U.K label. How & Why did this come about?

. Marlon Saunders – Hmmmmmmm…I am not sure I can agree with you in terms of calling Soul Brother rubbish…they actually have been very good to me in terms of my music being played in the UK. All a label can do these days is to partner with you to help get you exposure, press, and support for when you come to certain areas. I must say in terms of Enter My Mind they did just that.

13. Soul Discoveries – Jazzhole chose your voice for the latest Jazzhole record Poets Walk. What was it like going from this to Jazzhole?

. Marlon Saunders – Jazzhole is a very comfortable place for me to create. I am one of the founding members and I have been with the group since it began. Warren, John, and me wrote the music for Poet’s Walk in a week and recorded it like two weeks later with the band. It was an incredible experience.

14. Soul Discoveries – Three years ago you put out A Groove So Deep: The Live Sessions. It sounds to me like your trying to re-capture Donny Hathaway Live In Hollywood album. Where did you record this album?

. Marlon Saunders – I love the live recordings of Donny Hathaway!!!! I wanted to record something that was more of a listener getting a peak in on a jam session of Mood Control (my band) and the music. It was recorded in NYC at Euphoria Studios. My piano player Joe Scott and I came up with the concept when we touring Enter My Mind in the states. So much of music today is not created with humans creating together…playing and singing all at the same time and it is really refreshing to hear folk talking, laughing, and creating…I listened to that CD yesterday and I love it…yeah I still love it!

15. Soul Discoveries – I love all your songs even though I don’t own any of your albums. Is it true to say you’re a modern day Marvin Gaye?

. Marlon Saunders – Hmmm I find that quite interesting…how can you possibly love my songs if you do not have my recordings?…smile…we must make sure you get copies of the music…Many critics have called me a modern day Marvin Gaye…that is an incredible compliment!!!!…I just try to do my music…I am sure there are influences of Marvin because I think he was a genius. Being called a modern day Marvin Gaye inspires me to grow into half the musician he was.

16. Soul Discoveries – What Marlon Saunders songs do you listen to a lot?

. Marlon Saunders – I love to listen to Declaring Love, Inspiration, For Love, Coolin’, Love Philosophy, and The Beginning of Never…there are some new songs that I am working on that I am really falling in love with.

17. Soul Discoveries – Which music are you plugged into?

. Marlon Saunders – I am listening to a lot of John Coltrane these days, Sekou Sundiata’s Longstoryshort, Stevie Wonder’s Where I’m coming From, Marvin Gaye’s Let’s get it on, Al Green…Dexter Gordon… have made a playlist of a bunch of Luther Vandross ballads…some new dance tracks and also some ambient/lounge type stuff.

18. Soul Discoveries – Your website www.marlonsaunders.com states “A Jazz Journey by Marlon Saunders” please explain this and is this to do with your third album?

. Marlon Saunders – In 2006 I won a Maryland Arts Council/NEA Grant for a jazz multi media composition that I composed entitled Workin’ on a Buidling: A Jazz Journey. It was about my family the Walker family and our being on the Eastern Shore of Maryland for 7 generations. No it is not related to my third recording which will be called Birth of Revelation which I will be working on and releasing next year. I will be releasing a few interesting projects in the fall as well.

19. Soul Discoveries – Your site is also educational as it talks about slavery and you interview your 98 year old Grandma. What can we expect from your site this year?

. Marlon Saunders – That is actually my great aunt and she is now 101!!!!! And what you have just mentioned is all part of the multi media composition Workin’ On A Building…I will be working on my new site in the next couple of months. I have a project slated to be released in the fall of 2009. It is entitled A Peaceful Tone. It will be a recording of music and affirmations for singers or those who just want to have some relaxing sounds to chill with. I will also be releasing an EP entitled Unfolding which I will work on with Shawn Lucas. Then it will be back to work with Mood Control and the new recording.

20. Soul Discoveries - Do you have a message for Soul Discoveries readers about your third album?

. Marlon Saunders – Well the EP Unfolding is something I am excited to share this year. It has been a while since I have released a new recording and I am very excited for this recording as well as A Peaceful Tone. My third recording will be entitled Birth of Revelation and it will be a lot fun…great singing, great playing from Mood Control, and good down home soul music! This will be released in 2010. But not to worry there will be plenty of music coming that will keep ya grooving!
